      Restaurants in Adelaide are mindful

It’s largely accepted that the title of food capital of Australia goes to Melbourne, but that certainly doesn’t mean Adelaide and its restaurants go without a look in. Indeed, Adelaide fosters food culture with spirit and a conscience. As in any major city, you’ll find cuisines from all over the world here – French to Taiwanese, Russian to American, which all contributes to incredible and delicious diversity – but Adelaide’s restaurants and the city as a whole are mindful towards where their food comes from and promote as much as possible the idea that food should be something everyone gets excited about. Why does this matter? Well, it means the restaurants of Adelaide strive for a particular standard, and if any particular one doesn’t meet that standard it’s not often too successful.

Exceptional food and wine meet at Adelaide restaurants

So, we know Adelaide, its restaurants and indeed its people care about food, so naturally it follows that they care about wine as well. Adelaide claims the title of wine capital of Australia without question – heck, it’s one of the wine capitals of the world. The city is home to the National Wine Centre of Australia and there are 18 wine regions nearby producing not only boutique wines but branded wines that are genuinely world-famous. Yep, Adelaidians know wine like Melbournians know their coffee, and what does all this mean for you? Just an exceptional glass of wine at almost any restaurant in Adelaide to go along with your food. The finest match. The perfect pair. Not too far short of heaven.

So where to find it all?

Food? Check. Wine? Check. All that’s needed now are the best spots to enjoy them, and that’s precisely where we come in. Via Quandoo you’ll find the very best restaurants in Adelaide for whatever food you fancy or whatever occasion you have pencilled in. Naturally, the CBD is the best place to start, an almost symmetrical area of Adelaide with restaurants in all shapes and sizes lining every other street, particularly King William Street, Gouger Street and Pirie Street. North Adelaide also has restaurants to dazzle, and O’Connell Street is peppered with cafes, Italian and Thai restaurants in particular. Suburbs, and the coastline spots like Glenelg, Port Adelaide and West Lakes are of course strong places to look for fresh fish and seafood. One thing we love about Adelaide is it’s not too big, not too overwhelming, and you can skip between areas relatively quickly as you tour the most pleasing restaurants it has to offer. For breakfast, lunch or for dinner, Adelaide restaurants win big.

Midnight snacking in Adelaide: the fourth meal of the day

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, yeah, but in Adelaide – the South Australian metropolis that doesn’t get too much sleep, remember – there’s a fourth and very well-loved meal of the day: the midnight snack. To our mind there are two dishes that serve as midnight food icons and both, of course, are damn good. Pie floater is the first, essentially a nice thick pea soup with a traditional Australian meat pie plonked in the middle and then topped with tomato sauce and, if you’re particularly peckish, a dollop of mash. Thought to be a midnight favourite of Adelaideans since around the 1860s, the best pie floater can be found in restaurants around Adelaide’s famous Hindley Street. Up next is AB – Adelaide restaurants still argue over what that stands for but we like ‘Absolutely Beautiful’ – born from a couple of drunk students being unable to decide between yiros and chips and so deciding instead to pile them on top of each other and douse the resulting pile in garlic, tomato and barbeque sauces. You’ll find this late-nighter in a couple of very famous Adelaide restaurants along O’Connell Street and it’s damn, damn satisfying.
